MakMax Australia was engaged to replace the existing fabric awnings surrounding the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre. The original PTFE awnings, installed between 2003 and 2005, had reached the end of their service life and required a full renewal to maintain both appearance and performance.

Located in the heart of Broadbeach, this high-profile venue is one of the Gold Coast’s busiest event spaces. The replacement works needed to be completed efficiently and safely while keeping the centre operational throughout the project.

The Brief

The project required new steel and PTFE awnings to be installed in place of the originals, using the existing building connection points to reduce site impact.

With limited room around the perimeter of the building for exclusion zones or scaffolding, the MakMax team was challenged to find a creative and efficient construction solution that would minimise disruption to daily operations.

To achieve this, the team opted for an innovative offsite assembly method. Each awning was pre-built and tensioned at the MakMax Brisbane warehouse, then transported to site on a flatbed truck for progressive installation.

The Materials

A total of 24 awnings were replaced, each measuring between 5.5m and 8.3m long and 2.5m wide. The new canopies feature Chukoh Skytop FGT600 PTFE  architectural membrane,  a premium material offering long-term durability, excellent light transmission and resistance to UV degradation.

The supporting steelwork was finished with a PUR 5 Architectural paint system, including a Dulux Armour Grey topcoat for a sleek and durable finish. The new frames were designed to retrofit directly onto the existing building fixings, reducing waste and avoiding unnecessary modification to the original structure.

The Result

The project was completed on time and with minimal disruption to the Convention Centre’s operations. The new PTFE awnings not only revitalise the building’s appearance but also provide long-lasting shade and weather protection.

This successful upgrade highlights MakMax Australia’s capability to deliver complex retrofit projects safely, sustainably and efficiently – extending the life and performance of a landmark venue while maintaining its architectural integrity.
