Thailand’s Knowledge Park located in the Yala Province, southern Thailand (TK Park Yala) is a learning space that has provided the local community with a dynamic ‘living’ library and sports activity area for many years. The transformation of TK Park Yala into a learning attraction that integrates local knowledge and culture with learning activities is a source of pride in the Yala community.
The Brief
To renovate and revamp this centre. The challenge was to capture the light, energy, philosophy and movement of the centre in such a way it would integrate centuries of local culture with the very latest advances in construction technology.
The Concept
The balance between past future and national identity was a strong design influence. The choice of fabric/membrane construction materials was inspired by Yala mat weaving which has long been an integral part of the local culture.
The Materials
Selection criteria involved longevity and non-combustibility, making PTFT the fabric of choice. We began testing other materials for the weave panels and settles on Verseidag 18901 PTFE fabric. This had tested exceptionally well in combination with Sheerfill V PTFE and offered a much higher translucency resulting in increased illumination.
The Result
Aesthetically pleasing, culturally significant, and here for the long haul; the completed project successfully combined the cultural weave of the Yala community with the advanced technology of new design materials.
