The Wests New Lambton Bowling Club Canopy was constructed as part of a redevelopment project, with the club replacing their existing facilities with a new clubhouse, new synthetic greens and MakMax Australia Hawksbill Bowling Green Canopy to create a state-of-the-art bowling facility.

The Brief

The New Lambton Bowling Club has a rich history in the Newcastle community, providing members and visitors with a great appreciation for lawn bowls since 1935.

New Lambton Bowling Club approached MakMax Australia as leading specialists in bowling green canopies to provide a complete shade and weather solution to cover a single bowls green, BBQ area and the walkway around the perimeter of the second green. MakMax Australia designed and constructed a premium-quality PTFE bowling green dome roof over one green and additional player shade coverage around the second green to protect bowlers from sun and weather conditions so they can enjoy the sport all year round.

The Concept

Initial design parameters and council regulations required us to limit the overall height of the main roof. MakMax’s engineering team created a unique low shape leaning-arch design with a very shallow pitch. Bespoke design details were included in the roof’s structure in the perpendicular axis to the main struts in order to provide strength and stability in the structure.

The Materials

Two types of membrane fabrics were used on the different structures built at New Lambton Bowling Club. Light transmission levels, tensile strength and the shape of the structures were taken into consideration when selecting the fabrics for the canopy and walkway areas.

The PTFE fabric selected for the full bowling green canopy was SHEERFILL V, highly translucent membrane that provides exceptional strength and durability. PTFE is waterproof and an excellence barrier of protection against harmful UV rays. The PTFE roof evenly diffuses natural light to create a glare-free environment with minimal shadowing, making it perfect for bowling green canopies. The structure incorporates up-lights that backlight the dome roof at night, creating a strong visual effect.

The tensile membrane selected for the second green surrounding cover and BBQ area was SERGE FERRARI 720T2 fabric. This PVC/PVDF fabric was chosen for its durability and self-cleaning properties.

The Result

New Lambton Bowling Club was ecstatic with the final product, and believe the engineering, fabrication and installation was second to none. The club was pleased with MakMax Australia’s ability to deliver a functional and affordable solution to upgrade their club facilities. The fabric roofing elements now compliment the new club house with state-of-the-art efficiency combined with engineering practices and shapes tested over time.

New Lambton Bowling Club Canopy is another example of our turnkey D&C capability and MakMax is proud to add this facility to our list of sporting venues, most importantly our clients share this feeling of enthusiasm and pride in the end result.
