The Mooroolbark East Primary School COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) represents a versatile and invaluable addition to this small, suburban school campus. This barrel-vault style canopy serves as an outdoor classroom, as well as a basketball court roof and a playground shade. MakMax Australia worked with Modus Projects bring this concept to life, providing students with a protected space for physical education, recreational activities, and shelter from the elements.

The Concept

The primary objective of this project was to create an adaptable outdoor learning area that would enhance the school’s recreational options and provide weather protection for students during various activities. Measuring 34m x 17m, the TensoCola was strategically positioned between the existing school building and playground, optimising the use of available space. The structure needed to be durable enough to withstand varying weather conditions and while providing a low-maintenance addition to the small school yard.

The Materials

  • Hot Dipped Galvanised Steel Frame: The backbone of the TensoCola structure is a robust hot-dipped galvanized steel frame. This choice of material ensures the structure’s durability, corrosion resistance, and longevity. With low maintenance requirements, it stands as a lasting investment in the school’s infrastructure.
  • Mehler FR700N PVC Membrane: The Mooroolbark East Primary School COLA’s canopy is white Mehler FR700N PVC membrane. This PVC membrane was chosen not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its high-quality performance. This membrane material offers UV protection and weather resistance, safeguarding students from the harsh Australian sun and adverse weather conditions.

The Result

Assistant Principal Brant Kennedy enthusiastically described the impact of the TensoCola on Mooroolbark East Primary School: “The structure is sensational! Fantastic in both wet and hot weather!” The completion of this project has transformed the school’s outdoor space, providing a multi-functional area that caters to physical education classes, break times, and after-school activities.

The Mooroolbark East Primary School COLA, with its sturdy design and robust materials, stands as a testament to MakMax Australia’s commitment to delivering high-quality tensile membrane solutions. It not only offers valuable sun and weather protection but also enhances the overall educational experience for the school’s students.
