The MakMax/Taiyo Kogyo Group was chosen to design, fabricate, supply, and install the membrane roofing system for the renovation of Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, one of the host stadium venues for the 2022 FIFA World CupTM.

The Brief

In order to create a world-class stadium with a unique, modern design aesthetic, MakMax Group partners, Taiyo Middle East and Birdair worked with the project team at Projacs and design consultant, Al-Handasah. the innovative design makes use of 3 different membrane materials in the roofing design; PTFE, single-layer ETFE and TensothermTM.

The Materials

  • The majority of the roof is created with 46,450 square meters of PTFE.
  • The leading edge of the stadium roof features a 3,251 sqm ring of ETFE panels supported stainless steel cables and is the first application of ETFE on a stadium in the Arabian Gulf.
  • The lower edges of the roof, near the compression ring has been clad in Birdair’s innovative TensothermTM; membrane in order to provide fans with greater insulation from the Doha heat. The new Khalifa International Stadium is the first in the world to use TensothermTM.
