The Heretaunga Street Shade Structures are a series of 13 Monaco Modular Shade Structures installed in the Hastings City Centre. The project was part of Hastings Alive, an initiative which draws together a number of city centre-focused plans, adds vibrancy and fun to the heart of Hastings, building pride and enjoyment, and supporting the local businesses.
The Brief
Hastings City Centre is located within a character precinct, that recognises and protects the facades and verandah fascias of the heritage buildings within the precinct.
The desire to provide enhanced outdoor dining opportunities for the community, by the provision of sheltered kerb extensions beyond the verandahs, required a shade structure design that took into account both practical and functional considerations, as well as a requirement to not obscure the important architectural features of the adjacent buildings.
The challenges included permanent structures durable enough for provision in a public space and high wind environment, while being simplistic in design to not detract from the heritage buildings. There was also a desire to have provision for fully enclosing the spaces, and creation of a length of attached umbrellas, with guttering.
The Concept
The Materials
MakMax’s Monaco Modular Shade Structure was the perfect shade solution for the Heretaunga Street Shade Structures project. Easily adaptable in size, colour and configuration, the multiple installations along the dining precinct in Heretaunga Street provide the perfect solution for each individual business’ need, while still retaining the uniform design appearance to suit the requirement of the project.
The Linear edge model allows for the provision of roll down blinds and guttering. The stylish black steel and PVC looks classy and modern, yet juxtaposes beautifully with the heritage faces of the historic city centre district.
The Result
Hastings District Council (and the community) are thrilled with the final design. The first of the Monaco Modular Shade Structures were installed in early 2021, with the final sections added in January 2022. The Heretaunga Street Shade Structures are now a characteristic and often complimented part of the city centre.
