The Chadstone Bus Station Canopies were installed as part of a transport redevelopment project at Melbourne’s famous Chadstone Shopping Centre. The Chadstone Bus Station Canopies were installed on the new bus interchange, which has been designed to offer shoppers a central point to access to an extensive network of 14 bus lines connecting to the suburban train network and Melbourne’s east and south.
The Concept
The interchange provides many features for the comfort and convenience of commuters, including a series in interconnected, inverted conical structures, which form weather-protection canopies. The interchange also features wind screens and canopy heating during the colder months.
Chadstone Bus Station Canopies are made up of a series of 28 interconnected St Tropez Modular inverted conical structures split across 3 runs. Deisnged to offer shelter from the weather, but with a high leading edge in order to accommodate buses, the St Tropez is the idela shape for a transport hub like Chadstone Bus Station.
The main set of canopies, a series of 6 ST15 (15m x 15m) St Tropez structures run down the central island of the bus interchange. Rainwater is funneled through the central column and connects directly into the centre’s storm water runnoff.
Running along the outer edges of the interchange are 2 further sets of 1/2 cone St Tropez Structures – which provide shade and weather protection over the passenger zone, but are flat long the rear edge to maximise the space for bus arrivals and departures.
The Materials
Chadstone Bus Station Canopies are coated in high-translucency, long-lasting PTFE. The high-tech tensile membrane, with it’s low-surface tension coating canopies, is designed to stay clean and white, even with the large volume of exhaust fumes being emitted in the bus-station, car parking area.
