The Greens Double Bowls Dome is a double-green TensoSport-MAX Flatback bowling green canopy and set to become a local landmark in the small central coast town of The Entrance. The side-by-side lawn bowls roof is a key element in a multi-million dollar development currently underway to create a new sporting, entertainment, and residential hub in the picturesque central coast town of The Entrance.
The Brief
The Mingara Leisure Group, who manage The Greens, The Entrance, requested a high-quality roof structure over the two lawn bowls greens. The master plan of the development had the two bowls greens side by side (although not aligned with each other). A new clubhouse and car park were being built simultaneously with our structures, and the end result was focused on achieving a premium look and feel for the entire development.
The Concept
To cover the two sports surfaces, we designed a twin barrel-vault structure with staggered alignment. To accommodate additional shading and viewing angles, the canopy closest to the clubhouse is slightly wider, resulting in a visually unique twin canopy design where each structure looks similar but has different dimensions. The final dimensions of the two canopies are 39 x 33m on the canopy closest to the clubhouse, and 34m x 36m on the canopy adjacent to the clubhouse.
The Materials
Located on a peninsula of land in the beachside town, the club is less than 500 meters from the ocean on three sides, making steel corrosion protection paramount to the client’s requirements.
The Structural Steelwork is galvanized CHS steel with a PUR5 architectural paint system in a Signal White semi-gloss polyurethane topcoat. To complete the premium finish, any exposed structural bolts were spray-painted on site in a matching Signal White finish.
The Greens Double Bowls Dome is covered in Mehler Valmex Mehatop FR900N PVC. The Mehatop ‘N’ lacquered surface uses a special nanostructure which protects the woven fabric and offers a significant reduction in surface energy. This helps the coating to provide exceptional self-cleaning characteristics – especially in the salty coastal environment (compared to some other PVC membranes on the market).
The Result
Set to open in late 2024, The Greens The Entrance will be a new home for bowls in the Central Coast region.
