Combining a Senior College, Primary School and Catholic Church in one campus, St Andrews Marayong in Sydney’s Western Suburbs features a number of shade structures, including this barrel-vault school COLA structure.

The Brief

Project Architects, MCA, approach Makmax to engineer and install a proposed barrel-vault shade structure to create a combined walkway and covered outdoor learning area. The most important element of this project was that the design and functionality needed to be environmentally friendly.

The Concept

Choosing a high quality tensile membrane shade structure was important to the architects, as they required a design that had the ability to harvest the water that they were protected from. Attaching PVC rain guards to the top of the structure allowed for the water to flow to the four corners where there was a specially designed drainage system that lead the water through the structural poles and into a water storage area for use later.

The barrel vault school COLA also features cantilevered ends which overlap the surrounding buildings, creating fully sheltered ingress and egress to the buildings.

The Result

The installation of the barrel-vault school COLA structure at St Andrews was so successful, the school followed-up the project 2 years later (in 2010) with a unique set of Hypar Shade Structures in the Primary School grounds.
