As part of a major revitalisation of one of Hawaii’s most iconic marine attractions, a series of MakMax Architectural Umbrellas were installed throughout Sea Life Park on Oahu. The project demonstrates the versatility of MakMax commercial umbrellas and how we support our trusted distribution partners around the world to deliver shade solutions tailored to local needs.
The Brief
Tropical J’s, our distribution partner in Hawaii, was contracted to supply and install shade structures across the Sea Life Park as part of a multi-year, USD$30 million upgrade to modernise facilities, enhance animal care, and improve the visitor experience.
The park-wide upgrade included a mix of new buildings, viewing platforms and seating areas – many of which needed high-quality, permanent shade. The team at Tropical J’s selected a installed of shade solutions, including 14 MakMax Architectural Umbrellas:
- 9 Leva Swivel-Boom Cantilever Umbrellas
- 4 Custom Rectangular Umbrellas
- 1 Bright Yellow CS32 Centra Umbrella
The Concept
One of the standout features of the installation was the inclusion of the Leva swivel-boom cantilever umbrella, specially chosen for its ability to rotate and provide adjustable shade as the sun moves throughout the day. This flexibility is not only ideal for guest comfort in seating and viewing areas – it also offers protection for some of the park’s playful residents, including the sea lions, whose wellbeing was a key priority in the redesign.
The Result
From animal enclosures to café seating, the umbrellas bring a clean, contemporary look to the park while offering durable, long-lasting protection from the Hawaiian sun. This project highlights the way our engineered shade products can integrate seamlessly into themed environments and public attractions, and underscores the value of strong partnerships – like our ongoing collaboration with Tropical J’s – in bringing world-class solutions to local markets.
