Size: 373 sqm
Fabric: PTFE - Chukoh FGT800
Client: Lanskey Constructions
The Rydges Canberra Atrium Roof Structures project involved the replacement of two existing double conical membrane roofs and several polycarbonate skylight features within the hotel’s internal light wells and main atrium space. Delivered in a challenging, compact installation environment, the project demonstrates MakMax’s ability to deliver complex refurbishment works with precision and care.
The Materials
The two tensile membrane roofs, originally constructed using PVC fabric, were in need of replacement due to age and damage. The smaller of the two structures measured 6.5m x 25m and was set within a tight light well, while the larger 8m x 35m structure provided cover to a wider section of the hotel’s internal space. Combined, the two roofs covered 373 square metres of membrane area. As part of the works, MakMax also replaced four smaller polycarbonate skylight domes, approximately 1 metre in diameter, which sit atop each of the conical membrane structures.
A key design consideration for the replacement was an upgrade in membrane performance – specifically, improved fire resistance. MakMax specified Chukoh FGT800 PTFE, a high-performance membrane that offers enhanced resistance to fire while maintaining durability and light transmission. The trade-off for these performance gains however, PTFE’s higher tensile strength and reduced flexibility (compared to PVC) meant the confined installation zones presented added complexity, particularly within the light well structure.
As an additional elements to the project, MakMax was also contracted to replace the main dome skylight (5-metre-diameter polycarbonate structure) located over the central hotel atrium. This required removal of the existing dome, installation of a temporary waterproof tarp, and fitting of 16 new polycarbonate panels, each precisely cut from standard 1220mm x 2440mm polycarbonate sheets to suit the curve and profile of the dome.
The Result
Despite the constraints, the result is a refreshed and modernised atrium space that delivers increased interior luminosity and peace of mind with superior fire safety. The Rydges Canberra Atrium Roof Structures project is a testament to MakMax’s expertise in refurbishment and membrane technology upgrades for existing buildings.
