The Hazel Glenn College Sports Court Roof is a striking new addition to the school’s campus, providing year-round weather protection over two full-size basketball courts. Designed as a long-span TensoSport sports court canopy, the structure measures an impressive 75 metres long by 25 metres wide, creating a vibrant school COLA and covered outdoor learning area that supports sport, recreation and everyday student activities.
With the courts arranged end-to-end, the Hazel Glenn College Sports Court Roof presented a unique design challenge. In addition to the waterproof architectural membrane roof, the structure incorporates vertical shade mesh side walls that provide additional protection from rain, wind and glare while maintaining natural airflow.
One of the project’s standout architectural features is the custom printed PVC mesh end wall. The school’s logo has been printed directly onto the porous fabric, creating a highly visible landmark that reinforces the college’s identity and complements the colourful court finishes below.
The Brief
MakMax worked closely with aaax architecture to develop a sports court canopy that would become both a functional asset and a defining feature of the new campus.
The objective was to create a premium school sports courts facility that could be used throughout the year while delivering a visually engaging space for students. Every element, from the colourful mesh side walls to the custom printed end panel, was carefully considered to integrate with the school’s contemporary architecture and vibrant outdoor spaces.
The Concept

The Materials
The Hazel Glenn College Sports Court Roof features a 75m x 25m engineered steel structure, finished in Signal White architectural paint for a clean, contemporary appearance and outstanding corrosion protection. The design of the structure incorporated dedicated connection points for future frame-mounted scoreboards.
The main roof consists of approximately 1,700m² of Mehler FR900N architectural PVC membrane, selected for its long service life, high durability and self-cleaning surface characteristics. The waterproof membrane delivers reliable weather protection while allowing diffused natural daylight to illuminate the courts below.
Around three sides of the structure, vertical mesh infill panels extend approximately 5.5 metres from the edge beam, providing additional shelter while maintaining excellent ventilation. These panels comprise approximately 650m² of Royal Purple Commercial Heavy 430 HDPE shade mesh and 200m² of Bright Green Commercial Heavy 430 HDPE shade mesh, creating a bold visual statement that reflects the school’s vibrant identity.
The front elevation features approximately 150m² of white Frontside PVC mesh, complete with a custom printed 3-metre-high Hazel Glenn College logo. The porous PVC mesh allows airflow while providing a distinctive branding element that can be recognised from across the campus.
The Result
The completed Hazel Glenn College Sports Court Roof has quickly become a focal point of the Hazel Glenn College campus. Combining architectural design with practical performance, the structure delivers a high-quality school COLA that extends the usability of the school’s sporting facilities in all weather conditions.
More than simply covering the courts, the project has created a flexible covered outdoor learning area where students can participate in physical education, assemblies, recreation and community events. The combination of bright colours, custom branding and engineered membrane construction has produced a memorable destination that will support school sport and student life for decades to come.
