The Hamilton Island Outrigger Marquee project was developed for the Outrigger Function Centre on Hamilton Island. The project was to design and construct an attractive outdoor eating area canopy to protect patrons and event guests while dining outside beside the waters of this tropical paradise.
The Brief
The Hamilton Island Outrigger Marquee design is 12 randomly linked conical sections, this design was chosen as the owner had seen a similar structure that MakMax Australia had developed the year before (The Point Boston Peninsula Club). The design was developed further from the original concept to best represent the owners individuality, and made the structure stand out from a standard shade structure.
Located close to the shore on the wind-ward side of the island meant that the Hamilton Island Outrigger structure had to be engineered and built to withstand strong winds coming off the beach.
The Result
Located in Australia’s Wind Region C: Cyclonic, the multi-conical structure was designed and engineered to withstand a potential cyclone.
In 2017, when Cyclone Debbie caused wide-spread destruction throughout the entire Whitsunday Island chain, a photo from Reuters appeared online showing the to Catseyes Beach on Hamilton Island, with the MakMax built Hamilton Island Outrigger Marquee proudly standing unharmed among the debris.
