The Coles Byford TensoCar Carpark Shade project was completed in two parts, the first in 2017, with an additional expansion in 2018. MakMax was tasked with designing and constructing a total of 186 car parking spaces using our TensoCar Carpark Shade Double Bay With Walkway.

The Brief

The Coles Byford shopping centre required an efficient carpark shade solution that would also facilitate the growth of garden beds along the length of the carpark.

One of the most unique aspects of the Coles Byford carpark shade are the circular portholes fabricated into the canopy. MakMax designed circular cutouts in the canopy to allow more sunlight for the garden beds and to accommodate the growth of a number of small shrub-like trees planted along the length of the carpark runs. Three-meter circular cut outs were incorporated into fabric at the proposed tree locations to allow full sunlight to provide growth for the trees, and to provide a hole through with the top-most branches could grow.

The Materials

The project utilised Polyfarb Architec 400, a 400gsm High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) fabric known for its robust strength and tear-resistance. The client opted for a light Porcelain Colour, enabling ample shade cover while permitting adequate UV light transmission for the central garden beds. The steel structure was treated with Hot Dipped Galvanizing to ensure long-lasting corrosion protection and durability.

The Result

The Coles Byford TensoCar Carpark Shade successfully provided shade for the carpark while incorporating innovative design elements. The circular portholes not only added a unique aesthetic touch but also facilitated the growth of greenery along the central section. The use of Polyfarb Architec 400 HDPE fabric and Hot Dipped Galvanising treatment ensured a durable, long-lasting, and visually appealing solution for the shopping centre’s parking area.
