The Castle Hill RSL Bowling Green Canopy is a new covered bowling green delivered for one of Sydney’s largest northern suburban clubs. The bowling green canopy project has transformed an existing green into a fully weather-protected facility, supporting year-round play under the MakMax lawn bowls roof.
The Brief
Castle Hill RSL set out to convert one of its two bowling greens into an undercover, all-weather green with a synthetic playing surface. The objective was to create a functional covered bowling green that maintained open sightlines, provided protection beyond the column line, and integrated seamlessly with the club’s existing facilities.
Working closely with the club throughout the design phase, MakMax Australia facilitated a series of design workshops to refine the canopy form. The original concept included side awnings, however this evolved into a cleaner and more efficient solution. MakMax engineers developed a refined canopy profile using cantilevered edge beams, achieving the required weather protection while delivering a continuous, unbroken roof curve.
The Concept

The early concept included side awnings.
The Materials
The canopy adopts MakMax’s classic Flatback style, a barrel-vault form known for its clean geometry and restrained architectural expression. The structure is clad in Serge Ferrari 1002 S2 architectural PVC, selected for its durability, waterproof performance, and suitability for long-span tensile applications.
MakMax also installed three CS32 Centra Architectural Umbrellas to offer shade to players on the remaining outdoor green.
Integrated LED uplighting has been incorporated into the canopy design, providing an average illumination level of 300 lux across the playing surface. Lighting is distributed along each awning zone to support consistent visibility for both day and night play, reinforcing the functionality expected of a modern lawn bowls dome.
The Result
With a synthetic bowling surface installed by Bioscapes Group and the lawn bowls roof designed and constructed by MakMax Australia, the completed Castle Hill RSL Bowling Green Canopy delivers a high-quality, all-weather bowling environment. The new structure enables uninterrupted play in varying conditions and enhances the overall amenity of the club.
The project team and club members alike regard the completed covered bowling green as a strong addition to Castle Hill RSL’s facilities, providing reliable performance, visual clarity, and a durable long-term solution for lawn bowls, day or night.
