The ACU Sport Court Canopy, located at the Banyo campus of Australian Catholic University, is a 1233 sqm PVC canopy designed specifically to provide all-weather multi-sports options for students. Designed in conjunction with Congrad Gargett architects, the ACU Sport Court Canopy project was completed in 2013.
The Concept
The structure is of barrel vault shape and is anchored to twenty lightweight columns around the perimeter. The ends of the canopy are secured to a rolled edge beam. The longitudinal sides of the canopy have a catenary edge, secured and tensioned with galvanised cables with stainless steel swaged end fittings.
The structural steel is protected by a 3-layer architectural painted finish in light grey.
The Materials
The membrane used on the ACU Sports Court Canopy is Mehler FR900 PVDF coated PVC. Normally bright white, FR900 also comes in a Champagne colour. The translucent Champagne colour used for this project offers light transmission of 6%.
To stop equipment escaping the court and rolling into the adjacent carpark, the playing zone is protected by 50mm black HDPE sports netting at the end of the court. Measuring 13m wide by 4m high, the sports netting is suspended on 6mm stainless steel cable and anchored directly to the court surface.
Catering to a wide range of sports, the ACU Sports Court Canopy project was also finished with a range of accessories;
- A pair of retractable basketball towers including support cables, polyboard backboards, heavy-duty basketball rings and net.
- Electric 240v winches with radio remote control to deploy/retract the backboards.
- A set of fustal goals 2m x 3m including frame, net and sleeves (removable).
- A pair of netball posts with rings including sleeves (removable).
