The Wenty Leagues Bowling Club Canopy, located at Wentworthville, on the outskirts of Paramatta, is a fine example of a bespoke bowls club roof. The 2025 sqm TensoSport-MAX PTFE canopy is based on our Hawksbill curved arch design with a customised zig-zag edge profile.
The Brief
MakMax worked with Wenty Leagues Club and their landscape contractor, Landscape Solutions, on the overall redevelopment project. MakMax’s scope of works was to design and construct a single green bowling green canopy, 41m x 43m including integrated lighting.
The Concept
MakMax has the design and engineering capability to customise and adapt our canopy designs to suit the requirements of the project. The Wenty Leagues Bowling Club Canopy project called for the development of a new synthetic bowling green in the northwest corner of the local sports club’s property, which meant the new bowling green and canopy would be inset into the gentle slope of a hill.
In order to increase natural airflow in the areas where the ground level rose to the height to the columns, we used a saw-tooth, or zig-zag edge beam design along the northern side (next to the retaining wall). The aesthetically pleasing undulating form of the edge beam is reflected along the western edge, closest to the carpark.
A wide ‘eye-brow’ extends out over the edge of the retaining wall on the western edge, while the eastern end, which opens out on to the outdoor grass green, has been kept with minimal overhang to provide greater sightlines into the canopy.
The Materials
The Wenty Leagues Bowling Club Canopy is covered in Chukoh FGT-600 architectural PTFE membrane. PTFE coated, high-translucency glass fibre fabric, is a dynamic tensile material unmatched for its aesthetics and durability, making it ideal for tensile membrane structures and sports roofing.
Structurally, PTFE fabric membrane provides exceptional strength and durability, and is also waterproof, resists UV rays and is chemically inert. PTFE fabric can reflect as much as 72 percent of visible light to make it a cost-effective, low-maintenance option for club owners and developers who demand a material that installs white and stays that way, long after a project has been completed. The low-surface free energy of the material results in a fabric membrane which is readily rinsed by rainwater, as a result, it is exceptionally stain resistant and easy to clean.
The Result
Home of the Wenty Leagues Magpies, the Wenty Leagues Bowling Club Canopy has proved to be a popular and architecturally attractive addition to the club. According to their website, the club is a community gathering place for the most enjoyable lawn bowls experience imaginable.
